Feel the Rumble

Dear readers, friends, associates — audioheads — do you hear that? That’s the sound of our Newsroom presses rumbling back into full swing, ready to churn out regular updates once more. Despite the absence of our blog, however, our partners and clients know fully well that our day-to-day communication and work in Audio never stopped — and only continues to improve.

As you all know by now, Roger is at the helm of his own company, Shively Acoustics International (SAI), expanding on past work and evolving in new directions. Roger and SAI have ensured the continuity of the same dedication, know-how, and quality service that all of you have come to expect.

In fact, SAI has been busier than ever before offering our top-of-the-line consulting and engineering services in the areas of automotive, consumer, pro, and personal audio. We’re hard at work providing product testing and evaluation; competitive benchmarking; DSP development, modeling, and simulations; as well as continuing with architectural acoustics and adding even more.

The SAI web presence also remains strong, albeit with a new look: have a look around our revamped website while you’re here, and follow our pages on LinkedIn, Twitter/X, Facebook, and Instagram for the latest, real-time company updates.

A lot has happened in the past eighteen months. Time for a recap.

What have we been up to?

Since our last blog post, Roger and SAI have kept active attending industry events, developing business partnerships, writing articles, and even winning an award or two.

In June 2022, Roger chaired the three-day AES International Automotive Audio Conference stateside in Dearborn, Michigan. Read his retrospective of the event, published by audioXpress at the end of the year. For his chairmanship of the event, Roger was later presented with the Board of Governors Award at AES New York in October. Congratulations, Chairman!

Roger accepts his Outstanding Alumni Award from Purdue University.

Speaking of awards, Roger was one of three recipients of the 2022 Engineering Education Outstanding Alumni Award, given out by Purdue University’s School of Engineering Education on 29 September. Read about Roger’s achievement in the news release from Purdue, or watch him speak at the awards banquet.

The year rounded out with an appearance at the 183rd Meeting of the Acoustical Society of America in Nashville, Tennessee, where Roger presented a paper on automotive cabin acoustics and audio on Day 2 (read the abstract here on p. A120).

Roger’s major written output this year came in the form of a technical paper — his first since 2016 — an analysis and review of Dinaburg Technology’s C2S™ Alignment that he recently presented at AES New York in October. In anticipation of the event, we published the paper on the SAI website, while Roger also covered the topic in an October article for audioXpress. Earlier versions of the paper were presented first in May at High End Munich in Germany, and again in June at ALTI EXPO in Orlando, Florida. These talks were followed by a guest spot on the Total Harmonic Discussion Podcast (THD) in August, where Roger joined a panel discussion on Dinaburg Technology.

The year saw additional collaborations with audioXpress, including the article “75 Years of the Audio Engineering Society and Loudspeakers”, which appeared in the 2023 Loudspeaker Industry Sourcebook (LIS) Edition in June, as well as Roger’s August contribution “COMSOL and Klippel, Integration of Simulation and Measurement Data”.

Further highlights from 2023 included a June visit to the InfoComm Show in Orlando, a July partnership meeting with electronics manufacturer TBI Audio Systems, and a meeting of the Audio Product Development Alliance in September at the CEDIA Expo in Denver, Colorado (Roger is a co-chair of the APDA). Shively Acoustics has also been working with Israeli automotive software supplier Silentium to expand their presence in North America.

In terms of business development, the list goes on: we’ve patented a key component in a new health device for wellness company Apollo Neuro, worked to optimize a bone conduction device (more details to come), developed new automotive Sound Design algorithms for engine sound synthesis — as well as smart sensor modules and software integration for these — and helped to develop methods for easily simulating the non-linear distortion for loudspeakers and automotive audio systems.

Up next for SAI

Fast approaching for Shively Acoustics is CES 2024, which will take place January 9-12, in Las Vegas. Roger and SAI will be there to support our partners, secure new projects, and strengthen existing alliances with Automotive OEMs and Tier One suppliers as well as pro and consumer manufacturers. CES is an annual stop for us, so please reach out and look us up.

Looking further ahead, we would like to announce that Roger will be co-chairing the upcoming 2024 AES 5th International Conference on Automotive Audio, to be held June 24-28, in Gothenburg, Sweden. After the success of chairing the 2022 edition, we are looking forward to the opportunity once again. We hope to see you there!

Going forward, you can expect regular output from our Newsroom once again, so check back here next month. Until then, we wish you a happy holiday season, a warm winter — or a cool summer, depending on your location — but most of all a new year full of innovation and discovery. ■
